Austerlitz main line train station is one of six such terminals in Paris. It is located in the southeast of Paris, in the 13th arrondissement, on the banks of the Seine. Some 25 million passengers use it annually, about half the number passing through Montparnasse.
The station has a 19th century steel and glass roof. The façade is decorated by two statues representing “Agriculture” and “Industry”, which are the work of Elias Robert. Since the introduction of the TGV Atlantique — served by the Gare Montparnasse — Austerlitz has lost most of its long-distance southwestern services.
The Austerlitz station – which was named after Napoleon’s victory in Austria in 1805 – was built by the Orleans Railway Company in the 1830s. Some extensions were added in 1846 and 1852 and Pierre-Louis Renaud remodeled the actual station between 1865 and 1868. This station serves the southwest of France, Spain and Portugal. Nowadays, major renovation works have been taking place since 2000 in order to reactivate the station’s activity.
