Gare de Lyon is one of the six main railway stations in Paris, France. It was built in 1895-1902 to replace the old landing stage of Lyon and It was named after the city of Lyon, which is a stop for many long-distance trains departing from the station, most of which operating towards the south of France.
In general most services run to the south and east of France (TGV Trains to Southern France, the Alps, Basel in Switzerland and Rome in Italy). Gare de Lyon also hosts regional trains and the RER.
Gare de Lyon was built for the World Exposition of 1900. It expands on multiple levels and it is considered to be a classic example of the architecture of its time. The most remarkable element is the large clock tower atop one corner of the station that resembles in style the clock tower of the UK Houses of Parliament, Big Ben.
The station houses one of the oldest train station restaurants: Le Train Bleu restaurant, which has served drinks and meals to travelers and other guests since 1901 in an ornately decorated setting.
An unfortunate event took place on 27 June 1988, when a runaway train crashed into a stationary rush-hour train, killing 56 people and injuring a further 55.
