The place gave birth to numerous artists, musicians and writers throughtout its history. Sapfo, Alcaeos (the greatest lyrical poets) and Pittacos (one of the seven sages) were born here in antiquity.

Later on in modern days Odysseas Elytis (1911-1996) who was the winner of the 1979 Nobel Prize for literature and one of the greatest Greek poets ever was also born in Mytilene.

Other important intellectuals born on the island are: Argyris Eftaliotis, Stratis Myrivilis, Elias Venezis, F. Kontoglou, A. Panselinos, the famous folk painter Theophilos Chatzimichael.

At the area of Varea the Theophilos Museum is built giving a quite representative picture of the artist' s work.

Very near the Theophilos Museum, Teriade Modern Art- Library Museum can be found showcasing the bound volumes of the "Grand Books", with original works of modern artists (Picasso, Matisse, Miro, Shagal, etc.), with most of their pages hang open on the walls.
