Mytilene Town Information
Lesvos belongs to the islands of the Eastern North Aegean Sea. The island of Lesvos and the islands of Lemnos, Ayios Efstratios along with the islets around them form the Prefecture of Lesvos.
Lesvos is a beautiful and vibrant island. Olive trees cover its hillsides, fragrant gardens and stone made houses compose a picturesque landscape.
The island is an ideal holiday destination as it combines mountain and sea so all the preferences can be fulfilled.
For the summer Lesvos offers a wide variety of amazing beaches and a notable nightlife with taverns, lively bars with Greek and foreign dancing music, live groups and concerts by the sea.
Mytilini is a historical city spread on seven green hills overlooking the sea. The city has an average of thirty thousand inhabitants and it is built on the ruins of the ancient city and port.
Lesvos offers a wide range of accommodation, from hotel complexes to small agro-tourist units. There are daily flights from Athens to Mytilene and from Thessaloniki several times a week.
Ferries connect the island with Piraeus and Chios daily and regularly with Thessaloniki, Lemnos, Kavala, Volos, Samos and Alexandroupolis. Small boats will take you to Aivali in Turkey.
The climate of Lesvos is mild and healthy with warm winters and the sun shinning all year round. Mytilene is the capital of the island with a population that is about 100,000 and it is also the administrative center of the Prefecture of Lesvos. The island hosts also the University of the Aegean.
The local economy is based mainly on the agricultural production and tourism. The island is famous for its exceptional olive oil that has been awarded and the production of world famous ouzo. The process of distilling ouzo has remained the same through the years and the production is sold out every year.
The place gave birth to numerous artists, musicians and writers throughtout its history. Sapfo, Alcaeos (the greatest lyrical poets) and Pittacos (one of the seven sages) were born here in antiquity.
Later on in modern days Odysseas Elytis (1911-1996) who was the winner of the 1979 Nobel Prize for literature and one of the greatest Greek poets ever was also born in Mytilene.
Other important intellectuals born on the island are: Argyris Eftaliotis, Stratis Myrivilis, Elias Venezis, F. Kontoglou, A. Panselinos, the famous folk painter Theophilos Chatzimichael.
At the area of Varea the Theophilos Museum is built giving a quite representative picture of the artist' s work.
Very near the Theophilos Museum, Teriade Modern Art- Library Museum can be found showcasing the bound volumes of the "Grand Books", with original works of modern artists (Picasso, Matisse, Miro, Shagal, etc.), with most of their pages hang open on the walls.
