Liverpool Street Station opened in 1874 and it was built for the Great Eastern Railway (GER) in order to serve east London, Essex and East Anglia. E. Wilson, chief engineer of the GER, designed it along with the Gothic-style offices and entrance.

During the mid-1980s the station went under an extended renovation program that retained the 19th century architecture of the station while at the same time all the facilities were modernized and new function areas were added.

Despite its name, Liverpool Station trains do not go to Liverpool. For Liverpool trains passengers should go to Euston train station.
