The Netherlands is rightly known as ‘the land of bicycles’. There are 12 million bicycles roughly estimated in use. The popularity of cycling is mainly due to the country’s geography: distances between the cities are short and the countryside is almost totally flat. Detailed cycling maps can be obtained for every province from local tourist information offices. Also over 300 train stations can provide the ability to take the bicycle onto the train. Netherlands is also famous for the landscapes you can enjoy on the bicycle ride or in a long walk.
You can cruise the canals which can be found in almost any city or town and be explored by boat. In Amsterdam a special canal boat, known as the Museum Boat offers a joyfull ride.
Throughout the country there are frequent markets, where you can find from flowers and cheese to antiques and knick-knacks. One of the most famous cheese markets can be found at Waagplein. The Hague and Rotterdam flower auctions and Amsterdam’s famous Bloemenmarkt along the Singel canal.
If you are looking for art attractions Holland is the best place to explore and fullfill all your desires. Home of Rembrandt, Vermeer and Van Gogh, the country has an impressive range of galleries and museums. Amsterdam alone boasts 53 museums, 61 art galleries, 12 concert halls and 20 theatres. A special Museum Pass which entitles holders to free entry to over 400 museums is available from local tourist offices. The Van Gogh Museum, along with the Rembrandt House Museum, the voluminous Rijksmuseum, and Stedelijk Museum of Modern Art are some of the most famous of the museums in the country.
Amsterdam also can provide you with hard parties and nightlife. The city hosts some of the best nightclubs, jazz cafes in Europe. Of course you can try exploring the famous coffee shops of the city where soft drugs are not only allowed, but are sold over the counter, and the Red Light District, a nefarious playground where all sorts of characters mingle with the curious and the downright bizarre. Another way to spend your time will be to see the Tulips. The most spectacular glimpses of these flowers can be seen from the end of March to mid-May. Haarlem, 20km west of Amsterdam puts out a particularly spectacular display.
In Utrech, a favourite destination of the Dutch, you can admire the largest Cathedral in the country and many beautiful churches, such as 13th century Cathedral of Saint Michael, 11th century Saint Pieterskerk.
