Izmir is situated at the east end of Izmir bay it is Turkey's third largest port and it has the best natural harbor. Harbor traffic is not congested even though the ships transit the channel each day. Plenty ships can load/unload at the same time, but Izmir is mainly a discharge port for tankers.
Izmir port is divided into several sections: the outer harbor, the middle harbor, the inner harbor, and an explosives anchorage. The inner harbor has two main port facilities: the old port, which is sheltered by a breakwater and Alsancak.
Docking of ships at the old port is not permitted during the night for safety reasons, but ships can left the port any time. At the new port there is no restriction about berth. There is a pipeline for oil-carriers in the gulf of Izmir where tankers with a max.draft of 33 ft. can operate.
Berths at the new port of Alsancak are obtained on basis of the time and date of arrival of each vessel. If the port is congested, vessels wait for their turn at anchor.
There is a terminal for passengers and berths serve the passenger traffic.
The container terminal has 7 berths which haven an alongside depth of 13 m. The total length of the berths is 1.050 m. The terminal covers an area of 152.000 sqm with a holding capacity of 7074 TEU.
Fresh water is available from both docks or by barges. Water is supplied by port Administration.
Most types of marine fuel and lubricants available by trucks, subject 24 hrs advance notice.
Izmir Adnan Menderes International Airport is 27 km. from the port.
Service is provided to vessels everyday of the week 24 hours a day.
