Taksim and Beyoglu Area
Beyoglu is a district with a European-influenced architecture, driving from the previous century. Tunel, which is Europe’s second oldest subway, was built by the French in 1875, should also be one of the shortest lines worldwide - offering a one-stop ride starting of Taksim.

Near to Tunel is the Galata district, where on of the most famous symbols of Istanbul is located, the Galata Tower. Galata tower offers to the visitor the unique experience of 180-degree view of the city.

Between the Tunel area to Taksim square one focal point of the city can be found for shopping, entertainment and promenading. Istiklal Cadesi sets a fine example of the contrasts and compositions that are the basic characteristic of Istanbul; with fashion shops, markets, cinemas, bookshops, restaurants and even hand-carts selling trinkets and Simit (sesame bread snack) keeping the street packed throughout the day until late into the night.

The visitors can also enjoy the old tramcars that were re-entered into service, having a regular shuttle service up and down this fascinating street that apart from trams can only be accessed on foot.

There can be found Galatasaray High School, some interesting embassy buildings, the beautiful Balik Pazari (Fish Bazaar) and plenty of restaurants in Cicek Pasaji (Flower Passage). Additionally, on this street St Mary's Draperies, which is the oldest church in the area, dating back to 1789, along with the Franciscan Church of St Antoine, add a nice hint or a place to visit on your promenade.

Istiklal Cadesi ends at Taksim Square, that is a huge open plaza, crowned with an imposing monument celebrating Ataturk and the War of Independence. The square is always crowded since it is the hub of the city.

At the north end awaits the Ataturk Cultural Centre that is one of the venues of the Istanbul Theatre Festival whereas, north of the square there is the Istanbul Military Museum.

Taksim and Beyoglu are established to be the centers of Isatnbul’s nightlife throughout its history. Nowadays, many lively bars and clubs can be found off Istiklal Cadesi, including some of the only gay venues in the city. Beyoglu has also became the centre of the more bohemian arts scene.
